Don’t Just Memorize the Qur’an — Understand Allah’s Message Too

Many parents want their children to memorize the Qur’an, and that is a beautiful goal. But memorization becomes even more powerful when a child also understands the words they recite. I gave this advice to one of my students who was struggling with salah. He was praying, but he did not really feel connected to it. After speaking with him, I realised that the problem was not that he did not care about prayer. He simply did not understand what he was saying.

Why Children Sometimes Feel Disconnected From Salah

When children repeat Arabic words without knowing their meaning, salah can begin to feel like a routine of movements and sounds. They may stand, bow, and prostrate correctly, but their heart may not feel involved because they do not know that they are speaking directly to Allah. That is why teaching children the meaning of what they recite can help them pray with more love, focus, and sincerity.

Start With the Words They Already Recite

I told my student, “Habibi, listen… instead of only focusing on memorising the Qur’an, we also need to focus on understanding Allah’s message.” We started with the words he says in every salah.

What Does Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘Alameen Mean?

Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘Alameen “All praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of all worlds.”

Then we stopped and thought about it together. Why does Allah teach us to praise Him in every salah? Why does Allah deserve all praise? When a child understands that Allah is the Creator, Provider, Protector, and Lord of everything, these words begin to carry a deeper meaning.

A Simple Way to Help Your Child Connect With Prayer

You do not need to explain everything at once. Even understanding one short ayah can make a child pause, reflect, and feel closer to Allah.

The Beautiful Result of Understanding the Qur’an

We continued doing this with every ayah he used to recite in salah. After a while, the result was incredible, alhamdulillah. He started to feel that he was truly talking to Allah during prayer, not just practising movements. That is the difference understanding can make.

Help Your Child Pray With Heart

Memorising the Qur’an is an honour and a lifelong blessing. But helping your child understand Allah’s words can make their relationship with the Qur’an and salah much more meaningful. So do not only ask your child, “Did you memorise it?” Also ask them, “Do you know what Allah is telling you?”

Don’t just memorise the Qur’an. Understand Allah’s message.
